Music
Music is taught by a music specialist Mr Servant who comes in weekly to facilitate singing assembly where children learn a range of songs suitable for our Collective Worship and he teaches music lessons for the whole school. Based on the model music curriculum, Mr Servant teaches music building progressive musicianship from The Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage Two. Music learning is structured around four core areas.
Singing and Performing: developing vocal skills, expression and confidence through a diverse range of unison and multi-part songs.
Listening: Exploring, aural-analysing, and appreciating music from across different historical periods, genres, traditions and cultures.
Composing: Fostering creative thinking by inventing and structuring musical ideas, rhythms and melodies.
Understanding Notation: Developing an age appropriate grasp of musical language, symbols and standard notation.
Our curriculum is bespoke and based upon the model music curriculum and Music Express scheme of work. This curriculum builds musical skills sequentially year on year and includes elements of digital music.
Enhancements: Throughout the year events are planned to enhance the music provision. In September 2026, we were fortunate to have a Gospel Choir Workshop led by Karen Gibson from The Kingdom Choir. Karen led the Kingdom Choir’s gospel performance of ‘Stand By Me’ at the wedding of Prince Harry and Megan Markle. We were delighted that she came and led a special workshop for the children here at West Wittering.
In addition to music lessons, we want every child to have the opportunity to perform in a musical at least once a year. Each Christmas the whole school comes together to perform a show with each class playing a part to tell the Christmas story in a unique and creative way. It is a such a special time of teamwork, collaboration and an opportunity to put into practice the skills we have learnt in our music lessons.
In years three and four, children have the opportunity to learn an instrument through West Sussex music service. They spend a term learning an instrument and work towards putting on a show for parents and friends to showcase their skills. Over the last two years, the children have learnt the violin and the cornet from specialist teachers from West Sussex.
