Assessment at West Wittering Parochial Primary School

At West Wittering Parochial Primary School, assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning. We believe that assessment should support every child to make progress, develop confidence and achieve their full potential.

Our teachers use assessment throughout each lesson to identify what children know, understand and can do. This enables us to provide appropriate support, challenge pupils' thinking and plan the next steps in learning.

How We Assess Learning

We use a combination of:

Formative Assessment

This takes place every day through:

  • Classroom discussions and questioning

  • Observation of learning

  • Review of children's work

  • Feedback and pupil reflection

  • Short quizzes and retrieval activities

This ongoing assessment helps teachers adapt teaching to meet the needs of all learners.

Summative Assessment

At key points during the year, teachers review pupils' attainment and progress using a range of evidence. These assessments help us monitor progress over time and ensure that children are working towards age-related expectations.

Statutory Assessments

Children take part in the following national assessments:

Reception

  • Reception Baseline Assessment (within the first six weeks of starting school)

  • Early Years Foundation Stage Profile assessment at the end of Reception

Year 1

  • Phonics Screening Check

Year 4

  • Multiplication Tables Check

Year 6

  • Key Stage 2 National Curriculum Tests (SATs) in:

    • Reading

    • Mathematics

    • Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling

Teacher assessment is also used in Year 6, particularly for writing, and contributes to the overall picture of a child's attainment.

Sharing Information with Parents

We believe that strong partnerships between school and home support the best outcomes for children.

Parents receive information about their child's learning through:

  • Parent consultations

  • Written annual reports

  • Ongoing communication with teachers

  • Discussions about additional support or challenge where appropriate

We encourage parents to speak with their child's teacher if they have any questions about progress or attainment.
